Last Friday, I posted about walking the dolphins. This week, I had planned to post ย on a completely different topic. But, this morning as i walked along the beach, I had an encounter with a different marine animal – a stingray, that swam into the shallows very close to me feet and which I then followed along for a while, chatting away to it about the beautiful day. ย So, of course, by the time I’d finished my walk, there was a poem in my head.
And, if you’d like to see more of Mr Ray, here’s a little video I took.

Such wondrous magic in nature.

True, Myra ๐

What a delightful day, to converse with a ray.

About my poem about a ray
Robyn Hood Black says
Wonderful! We have lots of sting rays on our coast as well, though we haven’t been able to get to our public beach since the October hurricane. Crossing fingers they’ll have some roads and structures repaired for summer! Oh – and, I’m with Michelle – wonder what the ray’s poem to you might be? Expressed in swishes and sways, perhaps.
Sally says
Oh I do hope your beach access is restored soon, Robyn. I miss the beach so much when I’m away from it. Swishes and sways indeed – perhaps I should be writing that poem next.
Tabatha says
Were you scared you might get stung? You seem very brave to me! Great footage and friendly poem ๐
Sally says
Not scared at all Tabatha. Their barbs are not really ‘stings’ as such – though of course if you did tread on one it would do some damage.
Violet N. says
It sounds like you live in a holiday paradise. So enjoy your interactions with these exotic creatures. (Are your stingrays actually as poisonous as their reputation?)
Sally says
Thanks violet. As far as I know they’re not poisonous, the sting is actually a barb. If it did go into yoo it would inflict quite a wound.
Linda Mitchell says
I love it! You not only observe the world….you embrace it as a friend. Such a friendly poem. I want to meet Ray, someday.
Have a great week!
Sally says
Thanks Linda.
Heidi Mordhorst says
I agree–your Ray is both flippant and fluttery and also somehow dignified, deserving of the title Sir. What a thrill, to spend so much time with him!
I hope you didn’t feel too left out of the Billiness–I tried to get the word out, but perhaps we are not connected by social media (a term and a concept which, if you can believe it, we discussed quite seriously in 2nd grade this week). I’ll go fix that right now!
Sally says
Thanks heidi. no I did’t feel left out. All good.
Michelle Kogan says
Hi Sally, thanks for your splash with the ray in words and your video, they are both very refreshing!
Sally says
Thanks Michelle.
Mary Lee Hahn says
Oh, wow! I’d love to have a chance to walk with and chat with Mr. Ray!
Sally says
Maybe one day, Mary.
Michelle Heidenrich Barnes says
It’s not everyday you have a conversation with a sting ray… well, I don’t know, maybe it is for you, Sally. ๐ What I want to know is if the sting ray wrote a poem for you, too…?
Sally says
I’d like to think he might, Michelle.
Jane @ Raincity Librarian says
Oh, you live in such a magical place to be able to see so many wonderful creatures!
Sally says
Magical indeed, Jane.
