You are not a hundred dollar bill. Not everyone is going to like you or your story. Do not take rejection personally.
Meg Cabot
Oooooh, I like this one. It made me laugh first, then nod my head in agreement. Rejection hurts. Of course we want our stories to be accepted. But trust me, the rejection is not a sign of some plot, nor of a nasty editor sitting at the other end saying ‘nyah nyah nyah’. The editors and publishers I know are all very nice people. Your rejection could be for any number of reasons.
So, what to do when you get rejected? Rant at the wall, your cat, or your spouse. Then get over it, and keep writing and submitting. If you can’t – you’re in the wrong industry.

What can you do about it? Generally, you can’t hurry the response time. Reading piles at most publishing houses are huge. And, if a manuscript gets beyond the first read, then there are a range of steps and stages it goes through before a final decision. So, a wait is pretty much inevitable.

You have to write whichever book it is that wants to be written. And then, if it’s going to be too difficult for grownups, you write it for children.
Writing Quote of the Week
“Do not put statements in the negative form.
And don’t start sentences with a conjunction.
If you reread your work, you will find on rereading that a great deal of repetition can be avoided by rereading and editing.
Never use a long word when a diminutive one will do.
Unqualified superlatives are the worst of all.
If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is.
Last, but not least, avoid cliches like the plague.”
(William Safire, ‘Great Rules of Writing’)
This one makes me smile, as it’s meant to, though it has plenty of truth as well.
Writing Quote of the Week
Poetry is the opening and closing of a door, leaving those who look through to guess about what was seen during a moment.
Yup. A moment to read. An hour (or a week, or a lifetime) to ponder. And as for the writing of that poem – waaaaay more than a moment, I can guarantee.
