A new year
Is an unopened gift
A letter in the mail
A crisp new notebook
A story yet to be written.

I’ve followed the Kidlitosphere’s Poetry Friday, for quite some time, always meaning to participate, but never quite getting there. What better time to jump in than for the first Friday of the year with a New Year poem. To see what other bloggers have contributed to Poetry Friday, head over to The Miss Rumphius Effect, where blogger Tricia will present a roundup of the posts.
Myra from GatheringBooks says
Welcome to Poetry Friday! I love crisp new notebooks – the sound, the smell, the possibility. 🙂
Sally says
Me too, Myra. I have a bit of a tendency to buy too many, because sometimes they seem too special to write in and I save them for later. I’m trying to break that habit and tell myself every day is special – and there will always be more notebooks.
Buffy Silverman says
Glad you’re joining the poetry friday gang–looking forward to reading the story your year writes!
Tabatha says
Welcome, Sally!
Your poem reminds me of one of my favorites:
A Blank White Page
by Francisco X. Alarcón
A blank white page
is a meadow
after a snowfall
that a poem
hopes to cross
Sally says
ooooh – I love it, Tabatha. Thanks for sharing.
Doraine Bennett says

Welcome to Poetry Friday, Sally! Do I remember you from Kat Apel’s January Poem-a-Days the last couple of years?
Sally says
Thanks Mary. I haven’t done Kat’s January challenge, but I did do a poetry tag thing with her a few years back when we both had a new book come out.
Robyn Hood Black says

Dear Sally,
Appreciations for these images – I anticipate every one, too, & like how the letter, crisp notebook & story are also each unopened gifts, as is the New Year. This has a lot of depth in a tiny space.
HNY!
Sally says
Thank you Jan 🙂
Donna Smith says
Welcome! I love the idea of the year being a story yet to be written. On, then, to a new page!
Sally says
Thanks Donna. My pages are filling quickly and it’s only day 4!
Carol says

Sally, welcome to Poetry Friday and what a wonderful start with a crisp little poem for us all to reflect upon. Perhaps, you would like to join me in my next gallery collection. You can view my invitation that I posted on Poetry Friday today.
Michelle Heidenrich Barnes says
How wonderful to see you here, Sally! Looking forward to seeing your story reveal itself in poetry over the course of the year. Oh, and say hello to the blooming frangipanis for me. 🙂
Sally says
Will do Michelle – as well as the frangipanis we have jacarandas and Australian Christmas trees (orange flowers) blooming at present. Thanks for dropping by 🙂
Irene Latham says

This is MY first Poetry Friday too! I LOVE your image of a new notebook. I started a new one today (even though I wasn’t finished with my last one…I couldn’t resist)!!! I look forward to more Poetry Fridays together!

Hooray for being new together, Michelle. And thanks for your kind words 🙂
Linda Baie says
Love that ‘crisp new notebook’, Sally. I found you via your visit to me. Welcome to Poetry Friday, & what a great start! Here you are! Your visit to the beach and that cherry tomato seems far away (in time) to me, in Colorado! Happy New Year!
Sally says
Thanks for visiting Linda. Yes, the summer weather is glorious here, while I guess you are in the midst of winter.
