It’s Poetry Friday and this week Christie has issued a challenge for Poetry Friday: she has asked Poetry Fridayers to share a bird poem.
I instantly knew just what I wanted to write about. I had a perfect photo of a bird, which I have shared here on my blog previously. Except it was never supposed to be a picture of a bird. It was supposed to be a picture of a lighthouse. But, in a moment of perfection I could never have planned, just as I snapped the photo, a seagull ducked (seagulled?) in front of my camera and ‘click’ I took the shot – and I had a photo which will always be one of my favourites.
With all that in mind, knowing what to write about to go with the photo was very easy. I give you: Photo Bomb.
Thanks to Christie for hosting this week’s roundup at Wondering and Wondering. Head there now to see lots more poetry, birdy goodness.

Love this, Sally – & amazing photo with all that black and white pattern play!
Catherine Flynn says
What a great photo! Your poem gets the cheeky attitude of that gull exactly right! Thanks for sharing, Sally!
Kay Jernigan McGriff says
That is an amazing photo. I love the poem you wrote to go with it. It does seem to me what that bird is thinking.
Sally says
Thanks Kay – yes, I’m pretty sure I read his mind correctly 🙂
Rebecca A Herzog says
HA! This is fantastic! And I love all the black and white colors in the photo.
Sally says
Thanks Rebecca. yes, the seagull is cleverly dressed the same as the lighthouse 🙂
Carol Varsalona says
Who could imagine that a gull would photo bomb your photo? It is a wonderful image and so I can see why it is one of your favorites, Sally. Would you be interested in sharing it with me for my summer gallery? I have a few seagull photos of my own (that is the bird I chose for this week’s poetry challenge for PF) and would like to have your gull meet mine in #TheArtofSummering Gallery.
Sally says
Hi Carol. Glad you like it, ad of course you can use it for the gallery. Thanks for asking and thanks for stopping by.
Linda Mitchell says
Bwa ha ha ha! That is such a great story! So fun. I think I’ve been seagulled too. Not with a camera but with food. A giggle producing poem for ages one to ninety-nine.
Sally says
Thanks Linda. Glad you liked it. When I was in Venice earlier this year I saw a giant seagull (the gulls were so much bigger there) swoop and steal a whole burger from a girl who had just unwrapped it and was about to take her first bite. Kind of funny to watch but also a a bit scary. I’m glad my own gull was friendlier 🙂
Kimberly M. Hutmacher says
Perfect poem for that photo! Love it!
Sally says
Thanks Kimberly – and thanks for visiting.
JACKIE HOSKING says
Being a rhyme and metre gal I love this poem as it highlights the language’s ability to create music. You can’t help but tap along as you read it. Wonderful.
Sally says
Thanks Jackie. Glad you think it scans well 🙂
Ruth says
Wow, what a perfect moment! I’m glad you captured it in a photo and a poem.
Tabatha says
Yes, look at that seagull’s expression! It really needed a poem…so glad Christie spurred you to write one! Charming lighthouse, too — maybe it will get its own poem some day?
Brenda says
That is a photo in a million and perfect for your poem.
Sally says
Thanks Brenda. I am glad I revisited this photo with a poem.
Michelle Kogan says
That is a cool lighthouse, but that bird there, are you sure the two of you didn’t plan it out first … Love your poem Sally, it goes perfectly with the image!
Sally says
Thanks Michelle. Definitely just a fortuitous moment on my end. But I can’t speak for the bird, who may well have fully intended to be the star!
Linda Baie says
I immediately thought “photo-bombing” too, Sally and you wrote it so cleverly. This happened to our airport camera here recently. An eagle became very interested, gave everyone some marvelous pics!
Sally says
Yes, I saw the story of the eagle somewhere online, Linda.
Thanks for dropping by.
Kathryn Apel says
Look at me. Look at me look at YOU! (It was definitely planned. 😉 )
(And actually, I’m also rather impressed by that lighthouse!)
Sally says
It IS an impressive lighthouse, isn’t it Kat. It’s here in Bunbury, so I see it regularly but never get tired of it.
Diane Mayr says
Photo bomb is such a funny term, but quite apt. I love seeing the photos people post on Facebook of photo bombing animals. It’s almost as if the creatures are consciously messing with the photographer’s head!
Sally says
I’m pretty sure this seagull knew what he was doing! It was a split second thing but look at the determination on those eyes! Thanks for dropping by.
