Welcome to Poetry Friday. I’m really enjoying being part of this poetry celebration, connecting with poets and poetry lovers from around the world. I hope you’re enjoying it, too!
February is looking to be a busy month for me. Who am I kidding? With six kids, doctoral studies and a writing career, every month is a busy month. But February marks the release of my newest novel, 1915, and the busyness of celebrating and promoting means an extra level of busy. (By the way, if you’d like to join in the celebrations, you can leave a comment on the virtual launch below, and go in the draw to win a copy of the book.)
Another thing keeping me busy this month is a poetry challenge. I’ve blogged before about how participating in a writing challenge can be both fun and productive. When I heard about the Post it note Poetry Challenge, I had to give it a go.
The rules of the challenge are simple. Every day in February – or on as many days as you are able – you write a poem on a Post It Note (any size, any colour), take a photo and tweet it with the hashtag #postitnotepoetry. The poem can be any form and on any subject, the only limitation is in keeping it short enough to fit on the post it note.
Here’s one of my efforts:
And here’s another:
It’s not too late to join in with your own poems. The confines of space but can be a good way of condensing your thoughts, and the temporary nature of a post it note means you can use the exercise to draft something that you might rework later.
Poetry Friday today is being hosted by Elizabeth. You can see a round up of all the wonder that is Poetry Friday at her blog.
See you next week!

That’s such an inspired idea. There are different sized-post-its anyways, for longer verses perhaps. haha. Thanks for sharing yours in these lovely pictures. Congratulations on your book!

Thanks for introducing us to this post-it note challenge. I love how using post-it notes makes it significantly less “threatening.” Your fire poem really struck a chord with me, knowing how bad it gets over there. Remembering the smell in the air. Congrats on 1915!
Sally says
Thanks Michelle. The fires in WA at the moment are terrible. We have two huge ones burning.

I like a post-it sized challenge for the busy poet!
Sally says
Thanks Mary. Yes, nice quick format, for reader and for poet.

I like the posit poetry idea, but if take on one new challenge, my head will explode. I enjoyed yours, though. I can see that boiling down the thought brings you right to the heart of the idea.
Sally says
Thanks Brenda. I’ve found that when I’m drafting and revising I’m cutting superfluous lines and words easily, because i know they won’t fit, and ending up with something I like.

You are one busy gal. And I’m probably too busy this month to join in the challenge, but I’ve written MANY poems on Post-it Notes! And, actually, if a “to do” doesn’t make it to a Post-it Note and then slapped on the coffee maker, there’s a good chance it might become a “didn’t get done…” ;0)
Thanks for sharing your poems. And CONGRATS on the new book!!
Sally says
Thanks Robyn. I’ve written notes on post-its before, mainly because they were the closest thing. This time around they’re the impetus to write, which is lovely.

Congratulations on your new book! A post-it poem a day sounds like a fun challenge 🙂 I particularly like “we dread your deadly caress.”
Sally says
Thanks Tabatha. That’s my favourite line for the week, to 🙂

I’m partial to your fire poem since I’m working on triplets about fire. Everyone of them will fit on a post it note. Check earlier this week if you want to see some at http://www.poetryforkidsjoy.blogspot.com
.
Sally says
Thanks Joy. I love your fire triplets, covering so many different forms and aspects of fire.

I’m so glad you stopped by and joined the Poetry Friday fun. What a fun challenge. I’m wondering where you leave your post-it notes…
Sally says
Thanks Liz. AT present the post-its are on a folder on my desk. I was thinking I should stick them all in one place but haven’t found that empty space in my crowded house.

What a cool way to do daily poetry! I am going to try this. Thanks for the tip! And congratulations on the publishing party!
Sally says
Thanks. And good luck with the challenge. It’s fun.
